Durham is a medieval city and its cobbled streets, while beautiful, may make it difficult for some to make their way around. If you are concerned about access please consider attending at times when we predict there will be fewer people, Thursday and Sunday after 8.30pm. Wheelchair users and people with limited mobility
Please be advised that the roads up to and away from
Palace Green are cobbled and steep which may prove challenging for
some people with limited mobility, people with buggies and
wheelchair users. The riverside walk which is part of the one-way
system is a stretch along the riverbank, which while tarmaced, can
be bumpy in places.
The best time to visit Palace Green, the Cathedral, and
the College Gardens is after 8.45pm. There are many
installations to see right across the city so if you'd like to
avoid heavy congestion and peak periods visit the other areas of
the city first. We would particularly advise wheelchair users,
people with buggies and people with limited mobility to come at
quieter periods after 8.45pm.
There are many installations around the city that are accessible
to wheelchair users and those with limited mobility, here are just
a few of these. Along Framwellgate Waterside, you can see
Helvatictoc, A New Moon, and watch how your phone
changes Binary Waves. From the Gates Shopping Centre up
to North Road you'll see the interactive Liquid
Space, Capitalism Kills Love and the exquisite
Metamorph.
Wheelchair Access Route
We are implementing a route for wheelchair users which we hope
will help make it easier to move around the peninsular. When
exiting Palace Green either through the Cathedral or via Duncow
Lane, wheelchair access is permitted into the North Bailey and
Saddler Street. Please note: for safety reasons
wheelchair users may incur a wait until crowds clear. The artwork
on Prebends Bridge and the riverside walkway is wheelchair
accessible but the terrain is bumpy and narrow. Please be advised
and take care.

Riverside & The Gates Car Parks
