Community Projects
Artichoke are very pleased to be working with over 400
participants in workshops across County Durham to produce three
stunning artworks for LUMIERE. The artworks will use light in its
different forms, ranging from UV light to projection to LED and
will be collaborations between professional artists and writers,
local children and young people, colliery bands, ex-miners and the
women of HM Low Newton Prison.
The ideas generated and the materials produced in these workshops
will come together to create artworks that will be presented as
part of LUMIERE in Durham in November. These artworks are the
fibre-optic mining banners of Ad
Astra Per Aspera, a series of stories and fibs on Lightwriting's
cube, River of
Light, the parade that will open the festival, and the touching
Wish Comet, that
reflects the hopes of the women of Low Newton Prison.
Our family workshops, on the Science of Light, on Saturday and
Sunday will also get you glowing! Experiment with paints that
change colour in the heat, make fluorescent cup-cakes and jelly for
a 'glow in the dark' feast, create your own luminous mask inspired
by the grotesques of Durham Cathedral, design unique jewellery
using UV playdoh, create a work of art from thermophile images and
play in the Dark Den with all your UV creations.
