Sustainable Lumiere

Artichoke is committed to minimising the environmental impact of our work. Many of our installations (which will be lit for only 20 hours in total over the course of the project) will use low-energy lighting technology, rather than the more power-hungry conventional alternatives. in order to allow them to be appreciated, we’re turning off the street lights, which, because they are many years old, tend to use more power and result in more light pollution than the installations themselves.

We’re using generators which run on bio-fuel rather than petrol or diesel and we’re working with local suppliers in order to cut the number of miles that equipment and staff are travelling.

The Durham Park & Ride service has agreed to extend its hours, and we’re encouraging people to use public transport, walk and car share wherever possible.

Our partner Sky is committed to minimising their impacts on the environment and inspiring action on climate change. We have been working in partnership to ensure the unavoidable carbon emissions from the electricity used in the installations are offset. Additionally Sky has ensured all tea and coffee available in their kiosks is ethically sourced and served in 100% biodegradeable cups. To find out more go to www.sky.com/environment.
