all the installation pages so you can re-live the magic of the
festival long after it's been packed up and shipped back to the
various corners of the globe.

You can enjoy all of this media by visitng any of the
installation pages and selecting your preferred option from the
Watch & Listen sections. Enjoy historian Martin Roberts giving
a little bit of history about each of the installation locations, a
selection of images by festival photographer Matthew Andrews, and
in many cases you can watch a video clip filmed by audiences at the
festival.

As LUMIERE 2011 draws to a close this evening, we have been
reflecting on the event and wanted to share our thoughts on the
extraordinary events which have unfolded in Durham over the past 4
days.

The second edition of the festival ends today at 11pm and has
quickly established itself as the largest light festival in the UK.
As many of you will have noticed LUMIERE has doubled in size since
its first outing in 2009 attracting visitors from all over the
world to see the 35 different art installations spread all over the
city. We've been checking the papers and media and LUMIERE has
received plaudits in the national newspapers and on nationwide TV,
and the event has been broadcast across the world, cementing
Durham's place as a cultural visitor destination. The BBC have
had a lovely feature on their news channel rolling all day which you can take a look at
if you couldn't make the festival.

As we anticipated, the popularity of LUMIERE has also meant that
the city has become very crowded at peak times. Despite things
being congested in central areas the overall response to the
festival has been very enthusiastic: 90% of people surveyed so far
have said that they have had a good or excellent experience, and
96% believe that LUMIERE is good for the local economy and 95% said
LUMIERE made them happy.

As the festival organisers, we are delighted at the success of
this year's festival and that it has attracted so many visitors to
Durham. There have been many comments on this site about the way in
which the event was managed and a feeling that the control measures
which were put in place were inappropriate. Safely stewarding tens
of thousands of people in a small area like Durham city centre was
always a paramount consideration. We maintain that the crowd
control measures have been effective and that the organisational
plan - drawn up by professional crowd safety management specialists
and approved by the Safety Advisory Group and emergency services -
is robust. The police have confirmed that the event has passed off
safely during the last three nights without any incident.

The plan is constantly reviewed in response to the live event as
it unfolds, with visitor comments taken into account. We do
acknowledge that some people have been unhappy at the very large
crowds at the event and the safety measures put in place. We have
read all the comments posted here. We apologise to those who were
given wrong directions about which route to take.

We have advised throughout the festival that those with mobility
issues, young children and anyone who is generally uncomfortable in
crowds, should plan their visit accordingly and avoid the peninsula
at peak times. If you have any of these concerns please heed this
advice so that you can experience the festival in the best way
possible.

We hope that everyone out tonight enjoys the last night of
LUMIERE. It is looking very busy already. Please take your time
tonight, be safe, and have a wonderful evening.

The city streets can get very congested during the festival,
particularly toward the Cathedral area. Whilst we're delighted
LUMIERE is so popular we want everyone to enjoy the festival
safely. Here are a few reminders of some top tips to help you be
able to enjoy the artworks and the festival:

The best time to visit Palace Green, the Cathedral, and College
Gardens is after 8.45pm. There are many installations to see right
across the city so if you'd like to avoid heavy congestion and peak
periods visit the other areas of the city first. We would
particularly advise wheelchair users, people with buggies, and
people with limited mobility to come at quieter periods after
8.45pm.

For the safety of you and those around you please follow the
one-way system as you exit the Cathedral, down the South Bailey and
across Prebends Bridge. This is a lovely riverside walk with
further installations to see.

Please follow the instructions of the stewards at all times.
Your co-operation will help the smooth running of the festival
during busy times.

Leave your pets at home. The streets are extremely busy during
the festival and they might get trodden on. They won't appreciate
the art, no matter how cultured they are.

We wanted to offer some information in response to queries and
concerns raised over the event management of LUMIERE last night. We
hope this information is useful and helps you enjoy the festival
safely.

Stewarding
A dynamic stewarding plan is in place which has the support of the
authorities and emergency services. However this plan will not be
effective without the co-operation of the public.

We have thoroughly reviewed the crowd management plan, which will
be enforced much more robustly tonight, with additional stewards
deployed and police support in some areas.

Over 200 stewards - more than half of them professionals - were on
duty last night. The professional stewarding company chose to
have their staff wear discreet black jackets rather than high
visibility jackets. This was remedied part-way through the
evening, and from now on stewards will be in hi-vis jackets at all
times.

Congestion
Organisers strongly advise members of the public not to bring dogs
to the event. Certain areas are particularly congested at peak
times and may therefore prove tricky to navigate with pushchairs
and buggies.

Accidents
The event passed off safely and police reported no significant
issues.

Road Closures
The road closure will be enforced much more robustly this evening
and for the rest of the event, and there will be no vehicle access
to the peninsula from 5pm. Access will also be
restricted from 4pm.

Park & Ride
Organisers are very pleased that visitors heeded our advice to use
Park & Ride services rather than driving into the centre of the
city. Some Park & Ride buses were delayed in getting to
their destination, causing some issues at the beginning of the
evening, but Durham County Council has confirmed there will be more
buses this evening.

The park & walk facility at County Hall had plenty of spaces
available.

Yellow-vested teams are running through the city, cranes are
raising art structures mid-air, and as dusk falls Durham City's
historic landscape is being transformed as artists conduct test
runs in advance of the launch of LUMIERE 2011. Everyone involved is
working throughout the night to ensure another successful run of
the festival.

From flying transparent bodies, to neon-lit texts, to absolute
rubbish (quite literally), LUMIERE 2011 is coming to light,
presenting a vast range of work to be enjoyed and to inspire
residents and visitors once again.

Our amazing technical and production teams are working around
the clock to make sure everything is in place for a smooth switch
on next Thursday for the launch of LUMIERE 2011.

We've got some behind the scenes pictures of what they're
getting up to with Peter Lewis' SPLASH and how they're transforming
the Kingsgate Bridge into a man-made waterfall. A truss is being
constructed to fit over the lip of the bridge which holds the many
'taps' from which the water will power out at a phenomenal
rate!
